Biting pressure on the denture will promote clotting and will help to decrease bleeding following your extractions. Some minor oozing is normal for several hours following surgery.
To minimize swelling, apply an ice bag or chopped ice wrapped in a towel to the outside of your face alternating on/off at approximately 15 minute intervals for the first 24-48 hours.
Limit your diet to soft nurturing foods and plenty of fluids for the first week. Avoid hot beverages and foods.
Do not take your new denture out today. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (8 oz. water + 1/ teaspoon salt) before going to bed. Starting tomorrow, carefully remove the denture twice a day and clean it with a toothbrush and a low abrasive toothpaste or denture cleanser. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
Sleep with the denture in your mouth for one week unless otherwise instructed. Then you should take it out when sleeping in order to relax the gum tissues.
Due to the gum shrinkage that occurs within the first 6 months, you may go through periods of a loose fitting denture. A temporary liner will be inserted as needed. Denture adhesives can be used during this period also, but only after your mouth has completely healed following surgery. Following the gum shrinkage period (approximately 6 months), a more permanent appliance will be placed.
You may experience sore spots caused by the denture being too long or from uneven pressure being applied to the healing gum tissues. We will adjust the denture as these problems occur.
Feeling comfortable with your new denture may take some time and perseverance on your part. Eating and speaking effortlessly requires practice and actual retraining of your tongue muscle. We will check your progress at your regularly scheduled Recare appointment.
